How to reduce your hot tub's energy use
A hot tub's energy use doesn't just depend on how often you use it: insulation, the cover and the heating system all make a real difference to your bill.
Ecospa
High-efficiency insulation that cuts heat loss from the shell and cabinet: the water stays warm for longer with fewer hours of heater use.

A 5-layer insulation system designed for cold climates and year-round outdoor use. It's the calculator's most energy-efficient set-up.
Discover Nordic Insulation-71%vs. electric heaterHeat pump
Heats the water using far less electricity than an electric heater and, in its reversible version, cools it in summer too.

A thermal cover that prevents evaporation and heat loss from the water surface, the biggest source of energy loss in an uncovered hot tub.

Heating use by set-up
- Calculation scenario: constant ambient temperature of 10°C, water at 36°C and hot tub with the cover on.
- Heating: kWh per day the hot tub needs to maintain its temperature, depending on the system and insulation.
- Massage: 1.85 kW per massage pump and 1.15 kW for the blower, multiplied by your minutes of use.
- Electricity price: average household reference price for each country. You can enter your actual price.

Hot tub energy use: your most common questions
How much electricity does a hot tub use per month?
It mainly depends on the climate, the insulation and the heating system. With a constant outdoor temperature of 10°C, water at 36°C and the cover on, a standard hot tub with an electric heater needs around 30 kWh a day to maintain its temperature (about 900 kWh a month). With Ecospa this drops to 9.3 kWh/day, with Ecospa + Nordic Insulation to 6 kWh/day and, if it also has a heat pump, to 1.7 kWh/day. Use the calculator to see the cost in euros at your tariff.
How much electricity does a hot tub use with the massage jets on?
Each massage pump uses around 1.85 kW and the blower 1.15 kW. With 1 pump + blower that's about 3 kWh per hour of massage: 30 minutes a day for a month comes to around 45 kWh, roughly 11 € at 0.24 €/kWh. With 2 pumps + blower, around 4.85 kWh per hour.
Which uses less: a heat pump or an electric heater?
The heat pump. Under the same conditions as the calculator, it needs 8.6 kWh/day compared with 30 kWh/day for an electric heater in a standard hot tub, 71% less. The colder the climate and the more you use your hot tub, the sooner you'll notice the savings. See hot tubs with a heat pump.
Does a hot tub use more electricity in winter?
Yes. The bigger the difference between the water and air temperature, the more energy it takes to maintain it. That's why the calculator uses a demanding scenario (a constant 10°C): in spring and summer, heating costs are considerably lower. Cold climates are where Nordic insulation and a heat pump make the biggest difference.
Is it better to switch my hot tub off when I'm not using it?
For regular use, it's usually better to keep it at temperature with the cover securely closed than to drain it or let it cool down and reheat it from scratch. If you won't be using it for a few days, you can lower the set temperature by a few degrees. The thermal cover is key: most heat is lost through the water surface.
How can I find out what the model I like will use?
